A Message from Our Moderator
From Stephanie Prevedel Hotard:
Hurtful things were said in our Private FB Group, "Friends of Affton Christian Church," a week ago today. The hurt extended beyond the immediate parties involved. I feel the need to apologize here, so that everyone who saw what was written and who felt the effects of those words can see my apology. I am sorry that I didn't step up and respond sooner. I am sorry that I didn't support the Open and Affirming committee and their goals. I am sorry that Shawn, Zane and Karrie felt personally attacked and unsupported. I promise to do better.
To be Open and Affirming means to make a commitment to fully value and affirm the whole authentic person as a child of god & a full potential member of Church. To be encouraged, not judged on their journey of faith. The desire to overcome negative stereotypes, derogatory language & all forms of bias that deny full humanity & loving treatment to anyone. As a Church to celebrate diversity & support reconciliation.
While I feel that our congregation does an excellent job of being welcoming, we have a lot to learn when it comes to being affirming. To be affirming means to take action. To look inside ourselves and examine our own thoughts and feelings. To examine our personal biases and to work, every day, to open our minds to those around us who are different than ourselves.
Hard conversations are ahead as we learn what it means and what it looks like to be an open and affirming church. In order to have these conversations we have to create a space where everyone is comfortable to express their feelings and opinions. This space does not feel safe for many right now. We need to work towards reconciliation. We need to decide if this is something that we can live into our daily lives, or not. At the end of this process we will have the opportunity to decide if we are ready to take the next step. I hope that we will be ready then, but I know that we are not ready yet.
The Disciples Virtual Gathering is an opportunity for Disciples to connect, learn, worship, and imagine new ways of gathering as church.
Our day together will focus on the covenant we share as Disciples and the promise of Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from the love of God. The program will consist of bible lectures, educational workshops, and worship service, with invited speakers and presenters focusing on our theme.
